ȫ̽’s libraries are sparking a love of reading in children, and that message took centre stage at the recent ‘Power of Libraries’ conference.
The event, held at The Hive earlier this month, brought together over 40 primary schools from the county and beyond. ȫ̽ County Council’s Library Service organised it to explore how libraries can help ignite a lifelong passion for reading.
This engaging conference highlighted how libraries are not just about borrowing books, they are key to helping children develop literacy skills, nurture their curiosity, and boost their confidence in reading.
From laying the foundation for school readiness to encouraging reading for pleasure, expert speakers shared inspiring ideas on how libraries can be powerful resources for both schools and families.
The event featured national keynote speakers, including Tabitha Witherick from the Association of Senior Children's and Education Librarians, who highlighted how libraries create welcoming spaces for young readers, and Ruth Baker-Leask of Minerva Learning, who shared creative strategies for engaging reluctant readers. Jenny Howe and Jill Connolly from the National Literacy Trust provided insights into the pivotal role of school libraries in improving literacy and fostering a genuine love of reading.
In addition, the conference also spotlighted library-led initiatives like the Summer Reading Challenge, designed to keep reading skills sharp during school breaks. Educators also discovered how empowering students through Library Ambassador programmes can help them become reading champions among their peers.
Attending teachers commented: “The varied topics covered were all relevant to me and the speakers were fantastic” and another highlighted that it was “Great to network with other schools.”
Councillor Karen May, Cabinet Member for Communities ȫ̽ at ȫ̽ County Council, echoed the importance of libraries in education: “It was wonderful to see so many teachers join us at the ‘Power of Libraries’ conference, working together to explore how libraries can inspire young children. We’re excited to continue collaborating with schools to ensure every child in ȫ̽ can develop a love of reading.”
Beyond the talks, the conference offered a vibrant marketplace where attendees could connect with library staff and partners. The event wrapped up with a compelling call to action: we must continue to strengthen the bond between libraries and schools, ensuring every child can experience the joy and benefits of reading in their daily learning.
