Let’s Waste Less volunteers will be on hand to help residents save money and reduce food waste at the BBC Hereford & Worcester’s Cost of Living Roadshow this Monday (27th) at the Malvern Link Community Fridge.
ȫ̽ County Council’s #FoodSavvy campaign will take centre stage, providing practical tips and advice to residents in light of new findings from WRAP (Waste Resources Action Plan).
According to WRAP, the average family of four is throwing away a staggering £1000 worth of perfectly edible food each year.
Councillor Emma Stokes, ȫ̽ County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for the environment, said: “The increase in the cost of living has put a significant pressure on households across ȫ̽. Through initiatives like the #FoodSavvy campaign and community fridges, we’re not only helping residents save money but also reducing food waste, which benefits the environment. It’s a win-win for our communities. I encourage everyone to visit the roadshow and see how small changes can make a big difference.”
The #FoodSavvy campaign emphasises simple but effective actions to combat food waste and save money. Residents will be encouraged to:
- plan meals in advance
- shop smart by creating a list and purchasing only what is needed
- store food effectively to maximize its shelf life
- use all purchased food, including transforming leftovers into new meals
The roadshow will also highlight the county’s growing network of community fridges. Unlike food banks, which require a referral, community fridges are open to everyone and provide access to fresh produce donated by supermarkets that is close to its Use By date. ȫ̽’s community fridges are already making a difference, and the initiative is expected to expand further .
